Highlights from Adelaide, Melbourne and Impact7

From September 13 to October 1, 2011 I was in Adelaide and Melbourne, Australia where I taught a few printmaking workshops and attended Impact7, the International Printmaking Conference.

I taught a short non-toxic copper etching workshop at the University of South Australia (UniSA) in Adelaide which was followed up by a 3-day workshop in the same subject at Adelaide College of the Arts (AC Arts). This workshop was organized by my friend, graduate school mentor/instructor and former studio partner, Sandra Starkey Simon, who now lives and works in Adelaide. The workshop was funded by a grant from the Helpmann Academy and was attended by students from AC Arts, UniSA and Adelaide Central College of Art. It was a blast. The students were amazing. You can check out pictures of the workshop here.

I also partnered again with Sandra at her studio, known as Magpie Print Studio, and taught a one-day Chine Colle workshop. Magpie is a beautiful facility located in the hills above Adelaide. It is surrounded by eucalyptus forest, and yes, koalas. In fact, there was a koala in a tree just outside the studio as we taught. It’s true. That’s him in the picture below. See more pictures here.

When the teaching was done I traveled to Melbourne for Impact7, the International Interdisciplinary Printmaking Conference. I attended 4 days of lectures, exhibitions and demonstrations. Basically all printmaking, all the time. One of the highlights for me was seeing the Australian Print Workshop. What a beautiful studio and great program! And overall a great trip! Or, as they say in South Australia, it was heaps of fun.
